4 Ideas for Family Fun on New Year’s Eve

As a kid, New Year’s Eve always felt like a mystery to me. I got stuck with a babysitter and counting down to midnight was a thing only adults got to do. In hindsight, I don’t think I was ever going to make it all the way to 12 anyway, but it would’ve been fun to try! I think parents are more inclined to stay home these days than ours were, so what was once “us and them” is now “everybody!” Fun, right? But that means coming up with family New Year’s Eve ideas.

Do your kids think staying home for the last night of the year means no fun and an early bedtime? We have four really cute and fun ways everyone in the family can help ring in the New Year. Even if your kids are small, they can still take part in the big countdown and get enough sleep to ensure that your New Year’s Day isn’t a crabby one. Here are our 4 favorite family New Year’s Eve ideas.

1. Time Zone Trickery

Who says you have to wait until midnight in your time zone?  It’s close to midnight somewhere in the world, right? So if your kids are fading by 8 p.m., find a city that’s celebrating earlier than midnight your time. Just use this time zone converter.

2. Countdown Drama

Let your kids count down the 10 minutes until midnight (in the time zone you chose). Do a family hug at every minute mark.  Write out the numbers one to 10 on balloons and pop them as each minute goes by. You can also have 10 different snack stations with mini-snacks: one chocolate kiss, two Oreos, five kernels of popcorn, and so on. Let everyone move from one station to the next as each minute passes.

3. Eve Eatings

Set up a buffet for pizza, sundaes, or tacos. While you’re enjoying your feast, help your kids complete iMOM’s time capsule. If you did one last year, be sure to get it out and look at how much your kids have changed over the past 365 days.

4. Make Some Noise

Spend part of New Year’s Eve making noisemakers for your midnight revelry and have a noisy parade around the house. Let your kids decorate empty plastic containers (with lids) and then fill them with unpopped popcorn kernels, beans, pennies, and other items that’ll make unique noises.
