Fall Activities for Kids

Fall is an exciting time of year. The weather changes and there’s an energy in the air that is so real it feels like you can reach out and touch it. If you want to switch things up and take advantage of the cooler temps and changing colors these fall activities for kids will not only provide hours of fun, many are educational and fun for parents, too!

Some take a little more work while others will make you feel like you’re getting a break, mom. What they all have in common though is that they capture the essence of fall: getting outdoors, cozying up with the ones you love, and using all your senses. Give your children experiences to cherish with these fabulously fun fall activities for kids.  

1. Fall Sensory Bin

Make a fall sensory bin with your favorite fall items. Your bin might include acorns, pinecones, leaves, gourds, pumpkin seeds, or dried corn kernels. Have fun exploring shapes, textures, and smells with this fabulously fun fall activity.

Children and parents can enjoy the warmth of a crackling fire while toasting marshmallows to perfection. All you need is some graham crackers, chocolate, and your toasted marshmallow to make a delicious stacked s’more. If you are really feeling creative, you can mix up the ingredients by using cookies instead of graham crackers or use various kinds of candy instead of just chocolate.

Collect some fallen leaves together for a leaf craft. Start by identifying the types of trees the leaves are from with our printable Leaf Identification Game. Then make leaf rubbings by placing leaves under a piece of paper and rubbing on top with crayons. Another option is to preserve the leaves by making a design by placing leaves on clear contact paper. 6. Visit farm animals

Visit a local farm to feed the farm animals. Pigs. Chickens. Horses. Sheep. There are so many animals to see. Create a lasting memory together petting the animals on the farm.

7. Homemade Applesauce

Is there anything better than homemade applesauce in the fall? It’s the perfect solution to the surplus of apples. You can make up your own recipes with the basic ingredients of apples, cinnamon, and sugar or follow the directions from a recipe.

9. Visit a Fair

Fall is a popular time for fairs. Have fun experiencing the joys of a fair together. Try new foods, visit some animals, and play some games. A fair is a great way to spend time with your children and support your local community.

10. Donuts & Cider

This is one of the fall activities for kids that feels like it’s more for you. Indulge in a freshly baked donut and apple cider to fully embrace the fall. Make it a complete experience by including the donuts and cider as part of a picnic.

11. Nature Walk fall activities for kids I spy

Take a nature walk together. Parents can make a scavenger hunt or play I Spy to find common items or changes that happen in the local area for a more interactive experience.

12. Bake pumpkin seeds

Instead of throwing away the insides of the pumpkin, it is fun to separate the seeds from the gooey pumpkin flesh. Once you have all the seeds separated, give them a good rinse with water, and then let them dry. Spread them on a baking sheet and sprinkle some salt on top. Bake them at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
