Protecting Your Child from Sexual Offenders

It's sad but true: there are people in this world who seek out and prey upon children in violent and sexual ways. We've all seen the reports on the news of children who've gone missing, with information eventually leading to a pedophile, often with a criminal past.

So how can you protect your child without creating unnecessary fear or robbing them of the innocence of childhood? Part of the answer lies in doing your homework as a mom, and talking with your children in age-appropriate ways about these topics.

You can check for the presence of convicted sex offenders in your area by accessing the US Department of Justice's National Sex Offender Registry. This database will allow you to search by name or geographic location.

Also, take a look at these guides to talking with your children and staying connected to them in a way that will help you know if something is wrong.

Big city or small town—it's hard to spot a potential pedophile. Be proactive about staying informed and empowering your children to protect themselves.
