ABC’s of Good Character

So much emphasis is placed on grades at school. But should that really be our top concern? At iMOM, we think it’s more important to work on who our children are as people. Are they kind? Are they thoughtful? Will they be honest if put to the test? These virtues aren’t always easy to teach, but we can lead by example and talk to our kids about what having good character means.

Being humble, responsible, and mannerly are great qualities to have. And with kids, sometimes it takes time to build these positive character traits. But if we keep these qualities in mind each day, it might be easier to find opportunities to teach our children to be empathetic, forgiving, and generous human beings. Why not print out our ABC’s of Good Character and tape it to a wall in a high-trafficked area? Seeing this list might remind your kids to think about these traits and weave them into their days.

Our children will have more success with friendships and in the classroom, and a better chance of lifelong happiness if they develop these qualities. Good character won’t happen overnight, Mom. So, don’t stress! With many children, it’ll take years of teaching and practice to instill these values. But keep at it. Your children look to you as their role model and will continue to do so throughout childhood and beyond. You have a lot of influence on their good character!

So, take a look at our list of character traits and think about which ones you might find most valuable at this stage in your child’s life. Is it being thankful? Obedient? Or maybe it’s being self-controlled? Take it day by day, and never give up hope! Your child will benefit from your interest in growing and improving her good character!
