Gingerbread Cake
George Washington’s mother loved to make his favorite snack, gingerbread cake. Here’s a modern day version of the treat the first U.S. President loved.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup molasses
- 3/4 cup hot water
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoons ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions:
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large bowl, using mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs and beat on low for 2 minutes.
- Stir in molasses and hot water.
- Combine flour, ginger, cloves, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
- Gradually add to creamed mixture.
- Beat just until combined.
- Pour into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
