Theme Lunch Ideas

When you’re home all day with the kids, either because it’s a holiday break, you’re homeschooling or they’re still itty-bitty, the days can become dull and the kids can become restless. Meal time is a great mid-day reset where everyone can come together, get re-energized, and even have an adventure!

Here are a few fun and easy lunch ideas for kids at home. Try some of these and lunch might just become everyone’s favorite part of the day!

Color Me Fun:

Pick a color and make that the theme for lunch. For example, you can buy green tortilla wraps and fill them with lettuce, sliced avocados, and grilled chicken with a lime for garnish. For dessert, you can serve green Jell-O or mint chocolate chip ice cream. You can also add some flare to ordinary ingredients by using food dye to change or enhance the colors.

Have your kids wear clothes that match your theme color. And, what would a color-themed lunch be without some paint? Include painting as your lunchtime activity.

Backwards Day:

Replace your usual lunch with breakfast foods like pancakes, oatmeal, and sausage or bacon. When you serve lunch, create labels for each dish with their titles written backward, like “tsaot hcnerf.” Wear your clothes backward and read your kids a book starting on the last page. You can sing songs backward as well.

Treasure Hunt:

Every child thirsts for adventure, so why not embark on one with your kids? Draw out a map, pack them a traveler’s survivor kit and send them on their own expedition as they search for clues that lead them to a treasure chest (or cooler) filled with goodies – and dessert! Have them stop at the treasure hunt halfway point to eat their lunch.

Survivor Kit Contents:

  1. Lots of water to stay hydrated
  2. Trail mix
  3. Fruit
  4. Sandwich or wrap
  5. Napkins or wipes
