8 Themed Dinner Ideas for Kids

Every day, the same question plays out in my head: “What can I make for dinner?” Even writing those words feels stressful! But that’s just me. You might have the dinner thing down pat. Still, for all of us, a themed dinner can help us plan a meal that answers the age-old question with fun and creativity!

Try these 8 themed dinner ideas for kids.

1. Globetrotter

Choose a country. Enjoy its food and customs. To add an additional learning angle to this theme, have your children research facts about the country—population size, largest city, most famous tourist attraction. Practice saying “please,” “thank you,” and “delicious” in the country’s language.

2. ‘Tis the Season

Winter, spring, summer, or fall. Step into the season with decorations and seasonal foods. And here are some activity printables for whichever season you choose: Winter Time Capsule, Spring Treasure Hunt, Summer This or That, and Autumn Charades.

3. Character Dinner

What would Spidey eat? Do Minions like meatloaf? Serve what you think Alvin and the Chipmunks would like. And since everyone will already be in a silly mood, play our Spill the Beans Game.

4. Toys and Games

Like LEGOs? Build LEGO platforms for your silverware. Cut your food into LEGO-shaped bricks. Dress up like a character in Guess Who, Candyland, or a piece in Monopoly.

5. Color Code

Is your child’s favorite color blue? Sounds like you’ll be having blue-tinted spaghetti, blueberries, and other blue-hued foods tonight! Get even more creative by color-coding your clothes, socks, and hair!

6. Candlelight

Kids are drawn to flickering flames like moths to a—you get the picture! Use flameless candles and have a little flashlight for each diner. Lights out! You can also wear glowstick bracelets or necklaces so everybody shines!

7. Role Reversal

You act like your daughter; she acts like you. Your son acts like your husband, and so on. Let them wear some of your clothes and take on your role at dinner.

8. ABC

Every food item starts with the same letter. Or, each child gets food that starts with the first letter of his or her name. Of course, you have to start your meal by everyone singing their ABCs!
